Aim and Scope

The recent rapid growing interests in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices and solar energy conversion and storage create a need for forums to discuss the basic science and technical and scientific problems associated with these areas. Therefore, there will be a pre-symposium of the 18th ISPPCC (18th International Symposium on the Photochemistry and Photophysics of Coordination Compounds) focuses on functional materials based on luminescent metal complexes. The symposium will cover OLED devices and systems capable of mimicking photosynthesis. The aim of this pre-symposium is to provide a forum for discussing fundamental aspects of luminescent transition metal complexes, the state-of-the art of OLED devices and multi-electron oxidation/reduction catalysis. An emphasis will be to relate these topics to the future of sustainable and renewable energy. With this in mind, the pre-symposium will cover two main themes:

(1) Energy resources for the future:
Recent advances in homoogeneous and heterogeneous catalyses for multi-electron transfer processes important to solar fuel production, such as water oxidation and reduction, will be addressed.
(2) Development of phosphorecent metal complexes for OLED Devices:
Development of efficient OLED displays and TV, and lighting sources heavily relies on the emitter materials. Recent advances in phosphorescent metal complexes will be addressed.

We can fortunately invite several outstanding speakers in these research fields. This pre-symposium will be held on July 3 (Friday), 2009, in Tokyo, which is known as a capital city having a modern multinational flavor. We would like to invite you to join this pre-sympsoium before flying to Hokkaido, where the 18th ISPPCC will be held. The pre-symposium will be held in the Tokyo Tech. conference hall in Tokyo, about a one hour train ride from Narita International Airport. Tokyo is a truly international city with astounding modern architecture, fascinating unique shopping districts and a rich cultural history. In addition, Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world.

We hope you will be able to join us for this pre-symposium.
